What Does Real Hail Damage Look Like After a Storm?
How Colorado and South Dakota homeowners can recognize useful clues without mistaking normal wear for storm damage.

After a major hailstorm, you may notice marks on the roof and wonder which ones are new. Some may be fresh impacts, while others come from foot traffic, manufacturing patterns, blisters, aging, or ordinary granule loss. From the ground, they can be difficult to tell apart.
A qualified inspection looks for a consistent pattern across the roof and related exterior surfaces, then documents it carefully. That record helps distinguish possible storm damage from ordinary wear.
The short answer
On asphalt shingles, hail-related damage may include impact dents, tears, fractures, or concentrated granule loss. The pattern is usually irregular because natural hail varies in size, shape, hardness, speed, and angle. Collateral marks on vents, flashing, gutters, downspouts, siding, screens, or outdoor equipment can add context.
One mark does not prove the cause, date, or insurance coverage. A professional inspection compares the roof surface, collateral evidence, storm information, material condition, and plausible lookalikes.
Start With Evidence You Can See Safely
Your safety comes first. Wait until hazards such as lightning, broken glass, unstable trees, and downed power lines are gone, then inspect only from the ground and inside the home. You can still document a great deal: photograph each side of the house, the yard, and visible exterior components before cleanup or temporary work begins.
Useful ground-level clues include:
- fresh dents or chipped coatings on downspouts and metal trim
- torn window screens or damaged siding
- dents on roof vents or soft-metal components visible with binoculars
- shingle pieces or other roofing material in the yard
- water stains or damp areas inside the attic or on ceilings
- a clear date and time for the storm.
These clues do not establish roof damage by themselves, but they help create a record and guide the inspection. FEMA recommends checking roof flashing after high winds and looking for interior discoloration that may indicate water entry.1

A distributed impact pattern
Natural hail varies in size, shape, and impact angle, so the damage is rarely uniform. A credible inspection looks across several roof areas and orientations to determine whether the marks form a distribution consistent with the storm path.
Changes at the point of impact
Depending on the shingle and the storm, an impact may leave a dent, tear, crack, fracture, or concentrated area of granule displacement. Granule loss alone does not settle the question. Manufacturing, installation, weathering, and foot traffic can also displace granules, so the surrounding pattern and material condition matter.
Supporting collateral evidence
The roof is not the only place to look for evidence. Marks on vents, flashing, gutters, downspouts, siding, screens, and other exposed surfaces can support what is observed on the shingles. Old dents, installation damage, and other mechanical impacts still have to be considered, but a consistent pattern across several parts of the home can help distinguish a recent storm from unrelated wear.
Material condition before the storm
Age, brittleness, sealant strength, prior hail exposure, installation, and weathering influence how a roof responds. Can a Storm Report Prove Your Roof Was Damaged?
NOAA’s Storm Events Database contains official National Weather Service records of hail and other significant weather, and local NWS offices publish storm reports for the Front Range and Black Hills.5 Those records can establish timing and regional context, but they do not prove what happened at a particular home. Hail can vary over short distances, and reports may be incomplete, so the weather record should be considered alongside property-specific evidence.

An impact-resistance label describes performance in a controlled test. It does not guarantee that a roof will withstand every hailstorm.

What to Request From an Inspection
